ABOUT THE BANK

The brick building housed one of the earliest private banks in the State of Florida. Col. Henry F. Dutton, a Union Army veteran from Vermont, came to Gainesville in 1873 during the reconstruction period. He established the H. F. Dutton Co., dealing primarily in cotton and phosphate. In addition, he and his partners also opened the Dutton Bank, one of only three banks in Florida at the time.

The Dutton building which housed this bank is still located there on the northeast corner of the intersection of West University Avenue and West 1st Street. In 2001, four University of Florida graduates decided to convert this actual town bank into a classy bar and lounge that would be a cut above the standard fare. Located in the heart of downtown Gainesville, The Bank has two enormous windows that overlook the rest of the downtown Gainesville scene. You can mingle by the famous neon blue bar or catch up around one of The Bank’s many fireplaces. For the best seat though, we recommend you reserve a private section in the Vault, the Bank’s VIP room. Along with many great members of The Gator Nation, the Vault has catered to many celebrities and is one of the reasons The Bank was named Playboy’s College Bar of The Month in February 2002. Enjoy and thanks for investing your time wisely.
